Next-generation structural acrylic adhesives, 3M Scotch-weld low odour acrylic adhesives DP8805NS and DP8810NS, could provide improvements over conventional high-odour acrylics, with significant benefits in productivity, performance, cost savings, as well as health and safety concerns.
3M says users of conventional acrylic adhesives know that these products typically raise inconvenient issues with odour, set times, impact resistance and storage requirements.
However, the new products are designed to solve these challenges while enhancing performance and productivity.
3M says these adhesives offer a fast cure rate, reaching structural strength in about nine minutes, which is half the time of ordinary acrylic adhesives.
They have higher impact resistance on plastics and metals, provide shear and peel performance, and improved adhesion to many plastics and metals, expanding the range of applications for which acrylic adhesives can be used.
The new adhesives are formulated to help reduce pungent odours and ease health and safety concerns.
They are also non-flammable, making them even more facility friendly.
With an extended 18-month shelf life and without refrigeration, these adhesives could provide more than double the shelf life of conventional acrylic adhesives, and can be stored at lower costs.
The development of these adhesives was enabled by collaboration with 3M’s dental division, which had developed a fast-setting, low odour dental composite material.
The company’s product developers saw the potential for this technology and worked to adapt it to bring those benefits to structural acrylic adhesives.
