Americas: Ampac unveils ultra high barrier film technology

Ampac’s Flexi FoilFree HB is a new ultra high barrier film technology that when incorporated in a laminate can achieve moisture, oxygen and vapor barrier properties approaching aluminum foil laminates without the use of foil.

The barrier laminates reportedly provide excellent product performance characteristics compared to traditional thin gauge foil materials.

Flex-crack and puncture resistance properties are significantly improved in Flexi FoilFree HB composites when used in place of foil, while also providing easier ‘tear open’ properties over foil based substrates.

Packaging has improved yield and is lighter weight versus comparable foil substrates, yielding lower greenhouse gases and requiring less energy consumption in manufacturing and distribution.

It features a defined appearance even after processing and handling, cheaper than aluminum foil-based composites.

Ampac says a two or three-ply Flexi FoilFree HB composite will provide comparable oxygen and WVTR barrier properties to more traditional three and four-ply foil based laminates, realizing improved material cost for applications in the healthcare, food and industrial markets.

The company says Flexi FoilFree HB laminates have successfully replaced three and four-ply foil laminates in the food sector, packaging both dry and liquid food products such as cake mixes, powdered soups, dips, gravies and liquid cheese sauce.
