Kortec introduces ‘Klear can’, a multi-layer, Bisphenol A-free polypropylene (PP) packaging technology as an alternative to metal cans at the interpack exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany from May 8 to 14, 2014.
The multi-layer plastic cans are designed to providing brand owners with clear, see-through PP in containers with an extended shelf life of up to five years.
They are suitable for packaging fruit, vegetables, soups and meats.
Suitable for retort up to 130°C, these clear plastic cans have been tested and approved for both retortability and the integrity of the double seam, which was designed to allow the plastic can’s flange to accept traditional (easy open and non-easy open) metal can ends.
As an alternative to metal cans, Klear Can:
– Has Metal can end for easy opening, hermetically sealed to the plastic can;
– Has a three-layer plastic construction (PP outer and inner layers, with an ethylene vinyl alcohol barrier) for shelf life up to five years;
– Has options for colored plastic cans, in-mold labels, or standard labels;
– Is stackable;
– Molds up to 32 cavities; and
– Works with the simultaneous Kortec co-injection process for same cycle times as single-layer plastic injection
– Works with existing metal can-filling facilities without the need for new downstream equipment.
“These plastic cans use the same steel or aluminum can ends, same filling, seaming equipment, retorting and cooling equipment,” said Russell Bennett, VP sales and marketing.
Klear Can was first introduced in the commonly used 41 cl size with a 75 mm end and height of 110 mm.
The company says it could work with other size cans as needed by manufacturers.
