Europe: Greiner Packaging conceptualizes classic U-boat beverage packaging

German company U-Boot Getränke introduces the classic U-boat, which is a schnapps glass filled with high-proof spirits that is dropped into a glass with soda.

It had previously been impossible to order a U-boat in clubs, bars, or the like where drinks were dispensed only in bottles.

The packaging for the ‘mixed drink’ concept is made with Greiner Packaging.

A packaging solution that is part soda and part alcohol has been on the market since December 2014, providing the classic U-boat experience even without the benefit of glasses.

“We developed a bottle-in-the-bottle concept and mastered the challenge of functionality and product safety,” says Günter Ausserwöger, head of division Kavo.

“Both bottles are sealed with the same cap which, when unscrewed, detaches the smaller inner bottle – the ‘U-boat’ – from the seal.”

“The U-boat then sinks in the bigger outer bottle.”

This total solution consists of a bottle, seal and decoration.

U-boat drinks are available in four flavors:

  • Blue: glacier water liqueur with lemon soda,
  • Green: Herb liqueur with energy drink,
  • Yellow: Vodka with orange soda, and
  • Orange: Vodka with energy drink.
