Asia Pacific: Zebra releases new 2D barcode scanners

Zebra Technologies launches two varieties of two-dimensional (2D) scanners in Singapore.

The 3600 Series is a new line of 12 ultra-rugged scanners, offering prolonged durability, enhanced scan performance, and manageability in demanding industrial environments.

The DS4308-XD, purpose built for electronics manufacturing, captures a variety of barcodes and marks emblazoned on circuit boards and other electronic components, delivering advanced scanning technology to track every component on the production line.

There has been a steady shift in the industry to using 2D barcodes as it encodes more data than 1D barcodes.

Correspondingly, VDC Research said the global scanner market is experiencing an accelerated investment migration at 60% of revenues from traditional laser scanners to camera-based 2D imagers by 2018[1], exceeding industry expectations.

The 2D imagers also have grown at a compound annual growth rate of 10%, outpacing the laser market (-8%) and overall total handheld market (+5%).

The 2D imagers can read the whole spectrum of barcodes including 1D traditional printed, 2D traditional printed, GS1 DataBar used in point-of-sale (POS) scanning, high-density barcodes, and all mobile and electronic barcodes.

These imagers can recognize poorly printed, torn, smudged, shrink wrapped, or damaged barcodes, permit omni-directional scanning, which allows data capture from more angles, enhance near-range scanning, and read multiple barcodes in a trigger pull.

2D imagers also enable various value-added functions, from mobile marketing, loyalty applications, image capture, to optical character recognition, allowing companies to ‘do more’ business with the data captured.
