World: Metal packaging is sustainable, says Sarten at event

Metal packaging, an infinitely recyclable product, was discussed in detail at the conference entitled Sustainability of Metal Packaging and Its Position in the Market.

Hosted by Turkish company Sarten in Istanbul on April 17, 2015, the conference was attended by 300 senior Turkish and international representatives from various industries such as food, cosmetics, paint and energy.

With its light weight, high durability and long shelf life, metal packaging is increasing its market share as it is sustainable and infinitely recyclable.

Becoming a new trend in parallel with the increasing environmental awareness, metal packaging is estimated to reach a global market size of US$115 billion by 2016.

Metal is also expected to grow its market share in the US$20 billion Turkish packaging industry.

The company’s CEO Zeki Sarıbekir emphasized the importance of all kinds of packaging and the fact that metal packaging in particular is a variety which provides a long shelf life, which is safe for health and the environment, and which has an infinite recycling loop.

“Metal packaging benefits both the consumer, and the environment, he said.

“Despite all these advantages, it is still open to debate if metal packaging has the standing it deserves both in the market, and also in the consumer perception.”

“At Sarten, we lead the way in this field. With these conferences we plan to organize every three years, together we need to raise the awareness of both the consumers and the industry, and help metal packaging reach the standing it deserves.”

“Demand for sustainable packaging is a fact of life, said EMPAC CEO Gordon Shade at the event.

“When companies do not focus on this, they risk losing to their competitors in their commercial strategies.”

“Average recycling rate in Europe is 73% and metal packaging has the highest rate.”

“We have a commitment to raise this average to 80% by 2020. Recycling rate in Turkey is 54%, and there is a great growth potential,” he said.

“Metal is a unique and permanent material. Since it has an infinite recycling loop, it creates a circular economy. Turkey has to become a part of this circular economy.”
