Europe: Food packaging company installs second X-ray machine to handle cold, metalized food packages

Food packaging company Budelpack Poortvliet BV will add a second X-ray machine to its operation in July 2014 due to customer demands and for product safety and quality.

This system will join more than 40 traditional metal detection systems that the company is using to detect stainless steel, ferrous and non-ferrous metal particles.

It says the X-ray detection system can detect smaller particles and foreign bodies other than metal such as glass, wood, rock and plastic.

The purchase of the system is because traditional metal detection is unsuitable for the inspection of very low temperature foods as the cold hampers precision, says the company.

The same applies to food in aluminum or metalized packaging, as metal detectors cannot “see” the difference between the packaging and the contaminant.
